Safety isn’t just our priority—it’s our foundation. Every part of our youth bowhunting program is built around strict safety standards, clear rules, and age-appropriate supervision, consistent with the organization-wide protocols outlined in our youth shooting sports safety standards .

How We Keep Youth Bowhunters Safe

  • Zero safety incidents in more than three years of youth shooting sports programs .
  • All coaches are background-checked and trained in youth protection.
  • Certified instructors with USA Archery , NFAA , 4-H , and ASA credentials.
  • Mandatory safety orientation before any youth shoots or handles equipment.
  • Clearly defined range commands and bowhunting safety rules for every session.
  • First Aid/CPR trained staff and emergency action plans at every range.
  • Strict control of broadheads and hunting equipment—only used in supervised, appropriate settings and in accordance with state hunting regulations.

Indoor Target Archery

Year-round training in controlled indoor environments. Ideal for winter training and skill refinement, and a great way for youth bowhunters to maintain form and confidence between hunting seasons while staying engaged in our broader youth shooting sports programs .

Youth Bowhunting FAQs

Have questions about our youth bowhunting training? Explore the answers below, or contact us directly if you don’t see your question listed. For broader questions about registration, policies, and other disciplines, you can also visit our Youth Programs FAQs .

What age can my child start youth bowhunting training?
Most youth can safely begin archery and basic bowhunting skills around ages 8–10, depending on maturity and physical strength. We start younger archers with light draw-weight bows and focus heavily on safety and form before introducing hunting scenarios. Many youth begin in our youth archery programs and then move into more advanced bowhunting pathways as they’re ready.
Do you accept complete beginners with no archery experience?
Yes. Many of our youth bowhunters start with zero experience. We begin with range safety, equipment basics, and short-distance shooting before progressing to 3D targets and bowhunting skills. No prior archery background is required—our youth shooting sports programs are designed to support true beginners.
Does my child need their own bow and arrows to start?
No. We provide loaner equipment for youth who don’t yet have their own gear. When families are ready to purchase a bow, our coaches help you choose the right setup for your child’s size, strength, and goals so you don’t waste money on the wrong equipment. You can also explore recommended gear that supports our programs in the Red Dirt shop .
Is youth bowhunting safe?
With proper instruction and supervision, youth bowhunting can be very safe. We follow strict safety protocols, maintain low coach-to-youth ratios, and have had zero safety incidents in more than three years of youth shooting sports programs. Youth never handle broadheads or hunting equipment without direct, close supervision. You can review our full policies on our safety standards page.
Do you prepare youth for real hunting seasons?
Yes. Our advanced youth bowhunters learn shot placement, game recovery, field dressing basics, and ethical hunting practices. We encourage youth to hunt with experienced family members or mentors and always follow state hunting laws and regulations. Families can also review state-specific information through resources like the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation .
How do you decide when a youth is ready for bowhunting scenarios?
Readiness is based on age, maturity, safety habits, and consistent accuracy at appropriate distances. Coaches look for youth who follow instructions, demonstrate respect for equipment and others, and can shoot safely and consistently before introducing more advanced bowhunting scenarios. This decision is also informed by our safety protocols and age-based pathways outlined above.
Can parents watch practices or help during sessions?
Absolutely. Parents are welcome to observe practices, ask questions, and support their youth. Some parents eventually choose to become volunteers or pursue coach training to help grow the program. If you’re interested in getting involved, visit our sponsors and partners page or contact us directly.
Do you offer financial assistance for youth bowhunting programs?
Yes. Around 70% of our youth receive $1,000–$2,000 in annual scholarship support. Scholarships can help cover program fees, equipment, and tournament entry so cost is never the reason a child can’t participate. You can learn more about scholarships and impact on our sponsors and partners page or by reviewing the Enrollment & Scholarships section above.
Where do you offer youth bowhunting training?
We currently serve families across Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas through mobile ranges, partner facilities, and community programs. If you’re within driving distance of southwest Oklahoma or north Texas, there’s a good chance we can help your youth get started.
